International Student Housing Options
First-year undergraduate students are required to live on-campus with limited exceptions. Students in their 2nd or higher year of university studies may choose to live on or off campus. Use these resources to help you find your new home in Ashland!
Living On-Campus in Residence Halls
Most international students live on campus as it is convenient, affordable and fun! Residence hall rooms are furnished and dining facilities offer a wide choice of healthy meals for different dietary restrictions. Living on campus is the easiest way to meet new students and get involved quickly in campus life. Students enjoy easy access to events and do not have to worry about finding accommodations, buying furniture or transportation.
There are 3 residence halls: Shasta, McLoughlin and Madrone. For a full description of each hall, floors and more information, visit the housing website at https://sou.edu/housing/residence-halls/ .
Shasta Hall: Shasta Hall is centrally located in Raider Village. Primarily first year university students live here, but all students may apply. Shasta is the most affordable choice and all rooms are furnished. Shasta also offers “The Garden Community,” a themed housing community for LGBTQIA+ students and allies. Most Shasta rooms are double rooms for 4 students to share a bathroom and 2 students in each bedroom. There are a few single rooms available.
McLoughlin Hall: McLoughlin Hall is centrally located in Raider Village. Most students are in their second year of study, but first year students may apply. McLoughlin hall offers suite-style living with a furnished shared living room and kitchenette in addition to bedrooms. Single- and double-bedroom options are available. McLoughlin is also home to the Multi-Cultural Community themed floor.
Madrone Hall: Madrone Hall apartment suites are for students in their second+ year of university who are looking for more independent and quiet living. Madrone is located in the upper campus of SOU. Each apartment suite is furnished and houses four students. Students have their own single bedroom and share the bathroom, living room and a full kitchen. Students in Madrone are required to purchase a meal plan, but have special options if they wish to cook most of their meals.
Dining: The Hawk Dining Hall is located in Raider Village near Shasta and McLoughlin halls. Students living in residence halls are required to purchase a campus meal plan. First year undergraduate students will choose the Red or Black meal plan. Students in their second+ year of studies have more options and Madrone hall students have a special meal plan to choose. The Hawk dining hall offers all you can eat dining with a variety of foods available at each meal.
Living On-Campus in Apartment & Family Housing
Campus apartments and family housing are a short walking distance from the university campus. The apartments are very popular and there is often a waiting list. Apartments options vary from studios to three bedrooms and are not furnished. Applicants receive priority if they are families with children, married, graduate level, aged 25+, military or veterans. We recommend applying early and having a backup housing plan. Visit https://sou.edu/housing/student-apartments-family-housing/ for more information.
Living Off-Campus
Living off-campus requires additional planning and time. Students should arrive to Ashland early to search for off campus housing as most places will want to meet you in person before they rent to you. Many Ashland locations will be within walking distance to the university, however locations in Talent, Phoenix or Medford likely will require a car. Due to the possibility of online scams, we do not recommend sending money to an agency or person before you can visit the location yourself.
Rooms for Rent: Many local residents offer rooms for rent and on-site studios in their Ashland homes. Rooms usually include a furnished bedroom and a private or shared bathroom. Kitchen access, shared utilities and other options will vary by location.
Apartments for Rent: Ashland has very few apartment buildings. Rentals are often managed by Property Management companies. Apartments rarely offer furniture. A security deposit equal to 1 month’s rent is common. Planning for extra expenses at move in and costs for furniture is suggested.
Houses for Rent: Houses for rent can be very expensive unless you are sharing expenses with roommates. Houses may or may not include furniture. People may advertise online or through property management companies.
